    How children learn mathematics

  2. Week 2

    Designing effective lessons

    • The 5E model — Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, Evaluate
    • Writing good questions across Bloom's Taxonomy levels
    • Lesson design workshop with peer review
    • Manipulatives, visual aids and low-cost materials
  3. Week 3

    Teaching the hard concepts

    • Number sense — building it rather than drilling facts
    • Fractions — the most misunderstood concept, and how to fix it
    • The algebra transition, from arithmetic to algebraic thinking
    • Geometry — visual intuition through to formal proof
  4. Week 4

    Error analysis and remediation

    • Systematic versus random error — how to tell them apart
    • The 50 most common student errors in mathematics
    • Diagnostic questioning to find the root misconception
    • Remediation that works, versus remediation that wastes time
  5. Week 5

    Assessment in mathematics

    • Formative versus summative — purpose and use
    • Writing questions at multiple cognitive levels
    • Portfolio and project-based evaluation
    • The NEP 2020 assessment framework in practice
  6. Week 6

    Practice teaching and feedback

    • Each participant teaches a 20-minute lesson to the group
    • Structured observation by peers and mentor
    • Individual debrief — what worked, what to change
